vintage pattern find

I trawled ebay and found a vintage pattern with numerous motifs to embroider...bonus was that on this pattern sheet was a pattern to make a hobby horse!
Yeah......BONUS!!!!

Now my two own a typical store brought one, but I have been doing the rounds and like the vintage styled ones out there in the handmake world.
With a store in the planning stage I can't get any wholesale... (and I have asked, but apparently they are time consuming to make?) so guess who is making them instead...me! This pattern needed a bit of tweaking. To start with it's tiny and not the shape I'm after and it's small.

The fabric here is scrap from a client (not my choice of material) and came in

handy to trial with.....3 attempts and I think I'm there.

I know I've just moaned about "copy" on my facebook page.....but I also know along with others that really there is nothing that can be done about it, especially today with the internet, so I'll take the flack when they are made. And again, the hobby horse is nothing new.

Handmade Bed

Finally, I got a new camera...curtosy of a great birthday gift from all my family.
So with it, I have been going a bit "lets test this setting out" crazy.

One thing I did do was get some better shots of the doll bed, complete with quilt and blankets I made for Madeline as a Christmas gift.
The week leading up there was talk from the kids about "the emormous present" under the tree. She knew what it was, but was ever so graceful to not let on.

When it was opened she said "thank you" like a thousand times and hugged me tight. It was perfect.

weddings and Frente

On Friday night, I put my Function Co-ordinator hat on and went off to ensure the wedding of Paul and Nicole went to plan.

Peg and Pole marquee was up, layout perfect, lovely candles adorned the tables. Everything was perfect.

The ceremony was magical with a backdrop of farm land and sea.

The evening was warm, not a breeze.

Just perfect.

So I got talking to the band. Nothing unusual, just introductions, who I was, what I was doing there. It was later that the penny dropped.

My bar man...the lovely Colin asked me to take a photo for him of himself and the delightful Angie. It didn't click then either. Then he said, "you remember Frente?"

"ah, yeah"

Well, this was Angie!!!!

I went all school girl. The professional hat disappeared. (see post below for a favourite song of mine)

Thank god I didn't scare her off. I then also got my picture with her. How lovely is that.

In the end, a long, exhausting, great fun and rewarding night. Topped off with meeting a high school favourite.

Oh and I was correct in thinking I forgot something all night....the bloody knife to cut the cake. Sorry Paul and Nicole!!!

First of all “Happy New Year”
It’s been a long time between posts.
I’m working full time this summer, which really has been unpredictable in the weather department, but really, I do not mind.
I’m not one for heat, I love the cold.
I’m working as a Function consultant and also managing a Bistro on the coast in a hotel. So this wedding/party planner is pooped!
What I can say is that I have been lucky to be part of some wonderful wedding couples big days and each one has been dramatically different.
I did also have a birthday thrown in the festive season.
Quiet Christmas Day, an even quieter (working) new year eve and it’s mid way through January 2012.
I have a few plans for the year and one is to open a shop. Since being back in hospitality I have had a renewed passion to bake. Still - I love to sew and thula will have some new designs out soon…..when I have some spare moment – but I would love to have a tea room.
I want to dress everyday in my vintage gear and serve tea.

So this little minx is off to research some more……and more and more…..

The last phew weeks I have been......
"ah, why bother?"

I could rant about how sick I am of seeing the same store brought pattern and dress made, selling for $50....frilly knickers going at unbelievable prices (I'm all for charity, but really spending $400 on a pair, just because it's so called one off and original and limited - crap!) I just sit in the corner and cry.

But I won't go on.

Instead, while frustrated, it's made myself look for new direction. I have new crafts and I love it, and in the process I will be showing you how to do it too.....

Coming up first is a how to make series, the first will come out this week. Free patterns, information and how to's, I can't wait to share.

Hello.
It's been a bit quiet...
Between working full time (at a part time job) and then spending what I can with the kids, it's a very busy world.
Lately on our days off, it's Spring cleaning, with some odd jobs around the house.
Painting, vegie patch preparation, riding ourselves of things we don't need.

Also it's given me time to try new projects along with finding lost treasures.

When my nan passed away a few years ago I inherited alot of her sewing objects. I forgot about her basket of lovely large wooden spools of thread, lace, fading tape measures and ric rac made in the Czechoslovakia....I say! - can you even buy made in the Czech ric rac anymore???

So a belated WELCOME to Spring everyone. Stay tuned.

I had a few emails about new designs. I know it’s been quiet and here is why.

Thula thula, it’s been 4 years of my life and along the way my family has been a massive support. The kids are wonderful…if at times a little unwilling models and hubby has been my biggest fan and never once hesitated in helping at a market.

But things have changed.

This year already has been FULL of change. Hubby quit a job that he took up 6 months earlier…after years happy at the YMCA he took the opportunity given to manage a new gym and work for a new company, which turned out to be very unprofessional and lets say business skills from the owners - non existent. I got sick of fighting with them over lost pay, over time and not to mention work practices……ahhhh, still brings nightmares. He now wishes he stayed at the Y.

So I went out and got a job. At first I was torn between thula or getting a job. But now 2 months in I am loving it. I’m now a function consultant for a local catering company and have been really loving it. Hubby now stays home with the kids.

I work days, he works nights for the same company I work for. It’s perfect at the moment.

And what comes now for thula?

Well, it’s changing.

It’s not the end.

For the time being I’m not making anything. But I will have a small line coming out in the later months. There are some new stockists. And I also have a new project for the brand. All will be revealed in the coming weeks.

It’s BIG changes.

It also keeps me in the creating spirit. I can’t just NOT sew, it’s in my blood.

But don’t go away as there is a giveaway coming up over on facebook and we will be at a few markets in the year.

It’s not goodbye to thula, just a little slow down.

So hope this answered your emails, why it’s very quiet, I’m now a full time working mum. I have to slow down a little and get organised. Just hope you stay around for the ride.

I can’t wait for Cloudstreet (showcase) to begin tonight in Australia.

While Water for Elephants (Fox) I’m dragging hubby to the cinema when it arrives closer to home. At the moment I’m replaying trailer after trailer to get sneak peaks….just for the costume

Wear Green

Back in 2008 I was having a very troubled pregnancy. I was in and out of hospital with very heavy bleeding (I mean HEAVY) and every time I was told that I had lost the baby. One particular one I remember the most. It was a Sunday, I had to be taken to hospital via ambulance at 2am and my hubby had to stay at home with our 11 month old plus my nephew who was staying over. He spent the best part of the night trying to reach family to tell them what was happening and I was left screaming at “interns” at our small hospital as they had no senior staff to attend! Great. The “doctor” told me he didn't know what he was doing, great comfort and finally I was taken to a Melbourne hospital. As it was a Sunday – certain areas were not operating, one being Ultra sound. (I was discussed at this…it’s a hospital…shouldn’t it be operational 24/7???)

Anyway I refused to hear the “baby has gone” without being certain. In my head I just knew that I was still pregnant, there was this knowing that is hard to explain. And when after many arguments they gave me the ultra sound. I think to prove they were right…..but oh how wrong they were.

The amazing delightful squeal that I gave when bub showed up on screen….it was a boy and he was still there, strong heart beat and all.

But my placenta was coming away from the wall…..the hospital quickly changed their attitude and I was cared for. That night I said to my husband, if we get to the start of May everything is going to be fine.

Bring on a few weeks later and I was having very strong cramps. We drove to my friendly hospital in Foster…such a great country hospital….40min away. I had an ultrasound and there was no explanation to the contractions, everything was normal. But within 10 min, I went into full labour.

I was 24 weeks pregnant. Helicopters flew a specialist in from Melbourne, but due to the contractions i couldn’t fly back, the ambulance (which in this town is my father) plus a special Neonatal ambulance came from Melbourne and we went, lights and all.

3 days of labour, no sleep and at 5pm on the 7th May (two days before my first baby’s first birthday) he was born. I was 25 weeks, I had the cross over day from week to week, but he was still tiny. He weighed 755g and was heavily tubed to help him breath.

Ups and downs followed, an operation on his heart at 29 weeks to close a valve (PDA) and many illnesses, “bradycardia/tachycardia” (heart beat too fast or too slow) and alot more. Anyway……………

We finally got home and though even then we have had many returns to the Royal Children's hospital with his chronic lung disease and meningitis, Aiden is a strong example of the amazing strength that these small bundles have. They are resilient and extremely proud. You can throw a skinned knee at him now and he “shakes” it off. So today is wear green from Premature baby day and bands can be brought at Lil Aussie prems, or show your support and wear something green.

Jelly roll to quilt

Remember the jelly roll I purchased?

Well, I did it.

It’s still not complete, needs to have wool batting and backing put on, but I am so happy with it.

Best thing of all is that the small little off cuts have been made into a dolls quilt for her dolls. There is a bed I am aching to make for her birthday for her dolls.

I just brought my first jelly roll.

Madeline’s new dress

My sister gets married next weekend (if we don’t get flooded out like this weekend)…but my kids are not invited….sniff, so I’m taking Madeline along to the luncheon I organised with the women of the family for her today.

She has been watching me as I make alterations to my sisters wedding dress over the past weeks and has been wanting to look like a princess herself. So I couldn’t resist making her something she adores.

The gloves, well, they were mine. At 4 I was a flower girl for my Aunt, they fit Madeline perfectly and she just loves them. Over the past few days I have heard, “can I wear them today?” “is today the party?”

Seems that it just will never end and now some friends are stuck with floods in the top of the state – Victoria….will it ever end?

My kids are also suffering from cabin fever. Since we got a fence up to keep them in the back yard and they have a cubby, sandpit and totem tennis to keep them entertained, I never see them. They LOVE outside, especially when the magpies come to visit and they warble away – that's’ both kids and maggies.

So today they are bored in their room, though with the mess that I see, I think really they are finding new “imagination” games. Time to time I go see what they are up too, it’s so quiet and they are standing on a chair looking out the window…forlorn.

Maybe some puddle jumping is on the cards later.

brand awareness or real charity?

Some things with the flood relief effort are just not sitting with me all that well.

The facebook pages asking others to “like” them so they can donate $1 for every like is just a great way to make your business known while riding on the back of tragedy.

Yes, I know it’s just a “like” but when they state they have a limit of $$$ anyway, why not just donate that, be included on the list of large contributors and feel good that as a company you can do it! I wish I could give a large sum of $$, but I just don’t have that kind of $$$, so I did my bit and donate what I could, like I do with other charities that I support. Personal to me and without me asking every joe blow to like me first.

I can’t go there to physically help, though truly I would give everything to.

I’ve read the arguments on these business pages at facebook, but clearly alot are missing the point when they argue other companies do this with other areas. Like children charities and breast cancer awareness being associated with products. What people are forgetting is that they do this year after year, not just for a few weeks, around a tragedy.

Take Ronald McDonalds for example. Without their Ronald McDonald houses' and work outside the burger chain, I wouldn’t have had a place to stay when I had my baby prematurely. Of course with out the staff and volunteers that worked there, it wouldn’t have run the way it did and the support I needed wouldn’t have been provided. But these people need the burger chain to fund them along with the extra donations throughout the year. I lived this first hand, I saw the cost of having to run the house in Clayton where I stayed for 4 months (some families were there for years)and the work without any “please like me or give me praise” attitude from everyone associated.

The money raised at buy a big mac days and from their coin boxes in store is used to build these facilities, homes and resources within the hospitals and it’s used EVERYDAY. (And before someone makes a point – I’m not promoting Maccas – we ALL know about it)

They have done this for years and really should be left out of the argument that “what about this or that…they do it” , point is they haven’t asked for people to “like” their business page before donating just around a tragedy that has recently occurred.

Simple, no argument! Done!

Personally I don’t like the McDonalds food and rarely buy it, but when the day arrives for Big mac day and when I see a charity box around for them, I give….it’s a charity I will support always, along with the Royal Children Hospital. (another area I lived first hand)

Brand awareness associated with a disease, well, is really a good way of making your product look great, give a feel good feeling to the purchaser and well, we all know what companies do it. Yet, what people are forgetting is that it’s done day after day with these products. They don’t jump on board for a few weeks, they do it long term.

While I see it’s just a “like” and I should get over it, I just can’t, it just doesn’t wash with me well. What annoys me more is the thousands of people who unknowingly put these companies in their status on facebook, which leads to free publicity for these companies – you can’t tell me that they are not laughing at the numbers who now know of them and the dollar signs in their eyes as they see the future potential sale -well after the disaster is gone, when the media moves on to the next tragedy elsewhere in the world, these companies have built a new profile in peoples minds, they gave a $1 for every “like” – really is this high school, are we all wanting to be loved that much before giving?

Plus with a simple status update now they can promote their sale/cheap products to thousands and quite a few of the new “likers” will make a sale. Money in their pocket, not the charity.

What happened to charity just being done, that you didn’t shout it front the roof tops to say you did, every $$ I give I’m not asking for praise, it makes me feel good at the time and after knowing I helped.

Look, go ahead and like them, I can’t stop you, all I want is people to know the marketing behind this.

Social media is a great tool to have – it’s allowed me to get my business known, but I never use it to promote my business with a tragedy, I have morals. Without the net, facebook and other tools I wouldn’t be able to get my products out so quickly, or allow news of the store be known instantly. I applauded it for this, but not when it’s used the way I have seen it lately with the flood.

I know big corporations have donated around tragedy and disaster for YEARS even before the internet, my argument isn’t about that, it’s “liking” a business Facebook page before they will give a donation and really it’s just as good as you “buying” from them – as now you know who they are and further in your path of life, you probably will think of them first for a product, all because it started with a status on a mates update and you went to “like” that page (even though they would be giving – so they say – anyway as they had a limit to the $$ they set aside to donate), it’s simply a great marketing tool – just in my eyes done in such bad taste.

Truly I have spent a few wasted hours on reading the arguments on the pages, from those who support them, but think about this, what will they do after the event?

They used your “like” , just as equal to a cheap date. Your being Used.

New Year, New Hair

Welcome to 2011 everyone.

I don’t make new year resolutions.

But, I do make plans and as the new year started I thought it was the best time to start.

Not only is getting back to the gym a priority, but also living a more 1940 lifestyle.

The one where you grow your own food, bake, have no tv, read, be more relaxed.

The tv is rarely on in the day, the kids are outside most afternoons since the fence finally went up. I love hearing them have a “play date” as Maddy calls it.

We have a vegie patch underway, I already bake and cook everything we eat, so I have that one covered, biscuit or cake anyone? And the chooks are on the way.

Number one is research…..on hairstyling. I also want to be dressed for the part in my PLAN. While I have to sew a few garments for myself, I am on you-tube getting the know how on hair.

Happy New Year everyone and I so hope that Christmas was good for you.

I just can’t believe that we are just about to herald in a new year! Where has this one gone??

I thought I’d share with you a little find that happened before Christmas.

After my nan died 4 years ago I inherited a cabinet. It was always destined to be mine, but it held a few hidden treasures. Maybe not amazing finds for some, but for me, it was golden.

When it first came to our new house, I cleaned the draws out and inside were some papers used for lining the draws and shelves, nothing special but a great insight into the 50’s and what happened on that day. Also were old Station master and running sheets of trains, kept by a relative who worked the rails in the 40’s – now they were interesting, but my mum swooped in and took those quicker than I could say boo!

But waiting patiently a year after it’s arrival to my home was a gem from 1929.

Tucked in the back, behind a draw was a newspaper sheet from February 28, 1929. Foy and Gibson – a Melbourne department store back then, was having major sales and Hats, Raincoats and Jumpersuits were the biggest items at the time. While Ball and Welch had new model outfits for sale. And to think, because a draw was stuck and I had to take it apart, that I found it – 81 years later!

I think my nan was watching me from above. I’ve been making a few cloche’s for Winter 2011 and this has brought me a few new ideas.

Kids last Christmas - my how they have grown!

Well, it’s sneaking up slowly and I am just as excited as the kids to see Santa this weekend!

With the street Christmas do done, work party over and tonight the kids day care Christmas break up, it’s all been all system GO!

Then on Christmas Eve the local fire truck travels around town with Santa and gives out gifts to the kids (gifts you wrap up and with a donation per house hold they deliver the present to your house)……I love the kids faces with this one, they get so excited with the fire truck, lights and Santa.

I’ve spoilt the kids rotten this year…..Christmas morning should be fun!

And for thula thula, it means break, no emails, no sewing and no anything for a bit. I’m off to do nothing but eat and drink over the holiday period, so from today till he 3rd January I am AWOL.

The on line store is still open, but I won’t be sending anything till the new year – Tuesday 4th January is the first day of sending goods brought over this period.

So to everyone, Merry Christmas and may it be a brilliant year for all. Thank you for your support, help, advice and lovely feedback this year.

2011 is looking quite exciting for thula thula and us as a family, so look out next year for a wonderful adventure!

Christmas.

The Festive season has begun.

On Friday night we drove around town to checkout the festive lights on houses. Some were simply amazing, but in my mind I was always thinking, “I hate to be the one to have to put all of that away after Christmas” - this is how I feel about the tree in the house when I’m putting it up…I know, killjoy.

Then Saturday was the annual street party – that is one reason I love where I live.

Being in a court, full of families, is brilliant. Best of all we have a park in the middle of the estate…..And the sun finally made an appearance (I got sun burnt – not enough or lack of sun block)….bbqs on, lots of kids running about and the fat man turned up!

Yeah SANTA! with great bubble blowers – a hit with the kids. And in true Aussie style he showed up wearing sunglasses and riding a ride on lawn mower!

BRILLIANT!

bitter….not!

So Oprah is in Sydney today…..pwhhhhh! I tuned off about her journey when she touched down in the land down under, I even had to censor the local newspaper that was harping on and on about her coming to Phillip island to see the penguins – well she didn’t and now today it’s hysterical women screaming about seeing a glimpse of her from a car window or high up on the harbour bridge!

What ever!

Why am i bitter, well, she didn’t give me a ticket. I did the registration thing and waited and waited and nothing…..I got an un-polite email of no thanks your not coming and now she sends me updated newsletters with a cherry – hello and I just press delete (I know I have to get around to “unsubscribing”) and I’m very upset.

Truth is I WANT to be there, but as I am NOT, I am hating hearing alllllllll abbbouuuuut ittttttt!

So I will have to satisfy myself with watching her show next year on the Oz journey.

Bum!

But there is someone I know there today….Mandi from Babyology and she is doing updates on facebook and on Babyology, so if you want to keep tabs she’s in the know today. I’m off to scream into a pillow!

Winter….I know, Summer has just begun.

But in the crazy world of fashion…..I’m actually behind on making my way forward for having a range ready for Winter 2011…..even saying 2011 is freaky!

Anyway, a real look is coming together and my main inspiration is the cloche (French for bell). I’m loving this style hat even for myself.

And from what I have trialled already on Madeline, are going to be amazing.

I had a few enquires about my props that I used at the last market. I have a brilliant bric ‘n’ brac and antique centre near by and I am always there. That is where they all come from, plus some old fav’s and family pieces.

So here are my favourites.

The good old fashion iron board – I remember my nan using one similar.

I think this is suppose to be a bed table? But it’s a great table prop at the market, fabric flower top!

One from my dad, he found this for $15 at a church fete…..bit water damaged, but the post is pure deco.

It’s time to unpack from another market.

And what a day. Our day started at 4.30am, it takes us just under 2 hours to get to Melbourne, so we are well practiced at setting up and taking down at the end of the day. Here is a few shots at the start of the day….(excuse the betting station behind)

I was also very pleased to quickly scoot around the stalls before opening and see what was on offer…the quality of products was amazing. As a shopper I wouldn't have known where to begin.

But back to my house today. It’s quiet, hot and been full of doctor checkups for master two. It’s his yearly fix to ensure he is on the right track with his health and so far so good. They are so pleased with his progress and just amazed at his development for a 24 weeker prem! I just can’t believe 2 years has flown by. The kids and I have fun un-packing and in amongst the chaos we had some photos taken for the store. The kids muck about now in photos, which is funny at times and frustrating in others. There are a few new items in, but sizes are limited.

Next Sunday is Mathildas market and I have a thousand things to do so I will be very much M.I.A on here, but very much at the market. so the thousand things include

a sister with wedding plans and a dress that needs some serious alterations (and bridesmaid dress shopping - god help!).
A customer that wants alot of dressmaking done and well just no time......I think this time of year is just crazy and at times you just might find me rocking quitely in a corner.
One little boy with a million checkup (and pricey $$$$$) appointments with Paediatricians, respiratory doctors, etc....
Christmas....not to forget.

Anyway! there is Mathildas market and I WILL be there. I have a bargain box of stock and alot of great goodies and clothing - you will also be first to see some great new designs. So come along. You will love it, there are so many talented and great handmakers.

Zimbabwe knits

As you know, Africa is my second home. So to find a wonderful organisation that is helping communities, I was very excited and now can show you some of the amazing work that I have had made for me.

The Knit for life organisation provides income for poverty relief in a community of rural women in South East Zimbabwe – extremely talented in hand knitting of baby and children wear and toys.

The cotton used is local and machine washable, warm in winter and cooling in summer, so just perfect for it’s use for everything children. But for these women it also allows them to earn an income and care/educate for their children and look after elders in the community – something close to my heart. They also get on-going training and what is better than learning a skill and passing it on to help a community and themselves!

So at thula thula I am proud to introduce my knits these wonderful women have created. They are perfectly made and finished.

It's raining again......

So not much in excitment is about us.

Small parcels are arriving of purchases I have made to make small things for markets.

Plus, beisde Thula, I also still do custom work and costumes for clients. This week I am swamped with Hansel and Gretel making, plus a mother of the bride outfit. Here is the hat for the costume....seems kids even for "muck up" day at the end of high school, never really grow up.

Back to more sewing, I wish I could stay longer and play along with Lou.....but you can continue, by seeing what others are up to at their house.

Well, it started of fine, but then it turned into a crappy last week, so I’m off to go play along with Lou from Buttons by Lou Lou.

Aiden and I on his favourite thing…a plane!

We started with a trip to the Melbourne show….nightmare, just so crowded and after a few rides, the kids were over it and so quite frankly was I, especially seeing the queue for the show bag pavilion and the price…$25 for a show bag of $2 shop plastic!

On the trip home Aiden got sick.

He was quiet ill and a short overnight stay in hospital had us saying ‘we spoke to soon.” You see, every year since he was born, we have had numerous hospital stays and medical dramas with doctors (hopeless some) and ambulance bungles (grrrr still!), we were so happy that we hadn’t been to hospital this year, must remember to not say anything next year till the following new years day. He did bounced back with a course of antibiotics and finally the rain went away and the sun came out ……what a relief.

So with the sun and a new lease of life, all weekend we hosted friends, all South African, there is a good bunch of us now in our town. Braai’s (bbq) Boerewors (sausage) and BEER…no translation. And there was the odd water fight and rugby match.

So I’m off now to clean and spruce the house up, then I have to get into finishing the work load that is thula.

At this moment I am a little behind and I can’t get the host site to come to the party and change my home page, so I am looking a bit slack. Trust me, I’m not, but as of today I am about 2 weeks behind, so summer will be released in bits and pieces. Stay tuned it’s a lovely one.

Hi everyone! I'm taking a few days off to look after my little man....as you know having chronic lung disease and getting a cold can be disastress on his lungs and last night was a doozie!
We had a long stay over in hospital for observation and the fact he is now playing - quietly for once - with his truck now at home, he is on the mend.

Just a typcial Monday here. I think Lou - Buttons by lou lou has something that my children would adore....a guniea pig. We don't have any pets yet...ops! sorry we have a poor (she is in need of some TLC today) fish called Connie, what I mean is we don't have anything (yet) that we can take out for a walk, or play with.

It's just boring cleaning day today. I don't know why, but Mondays seem to see the house get to such a state from the weekend. Maybe cause hubby is home now on weekends....?

But there have been some lovely developements in the week.

1. Maddy is now sleeping dry at night...no more nappies! I was expecting wetting the bed, changing sheets etc, but I have freakishly easy kids when I hear what my friends go through with toilet training. No accidents and she sleeps solid. She was easy to get out of nappies in the day at 2 years old and night was way too easy also.

I wish I had tips to help. (we'll see what happens with Aiden this summer, I'm hoping it's just as easy)

2. Aiden is now attending day care one day a week. He did not like me coming to pick him up, he LOVES it. When we go past the centre, he cries. In fact he ran to all the kids when we first arrived and there was no tears, except from me.

3. I'm on a fitness kick. Hubby opened a new gym a few weeks back and it finally settled into a routine, so I can get there now and train. Must loose that bum!

4.Didn't clean the cutting table I intended to do last Monday. Instead covered a few hair clips in scrap fabrics, anything to avoid cleaning. I did though get some items filed.

5. Slept.

Dull at the moment is life here and it's quiet nice for a change.

I'm looking forward to summer. The small amounts of sun we have had over the past few days have teased us to no end - the kids get outside and the park in our court is full of screaming laughing children....I love it.

But it also means I can release my collection for summer. With it also come new lines. Blankets, knits, pillows, heirloom toys and rattles. I'll detail this more soon.

As with most Mondays I am playing along with Lou from buttons by lou lou.

I'm a bit embarressed to put this photo up, but it will spur me on to clean it again. My cutting table the last few weeks has been given a workout, as I cut and sew all my orders for summer to head off to the stockists and also for markets around Melbourne (can you believe it's Christmas soon), so with that comes with alot of dumping and I am shamed to say the space is no longer there.

So I'm off to clean before I can do anything else. I've started about 5 different projects as well, all needing to be finished, ahhhh, they say clutter isn't good for you and I have to agree. So today I must clean. How boring.

Kids shows

There is one show I adore just as much as the kids. Mr Maker, a great BBC production that gets kids crafting. (In fact anything from the UK is great with me for kids, they get it right - fun, learning and a bit of silly!)

We have made a few things off the show, which the kids get really into. So if your stuck with what to do with the kids one rainy afternoon, get watching this show. Start collecting everything - especially all that you recycle and get crafting.

20 quiet minutes in the morning. My kids are mesmerized by Mr Maker.

Many years ago, I was living in Scotland, in a small little cottage in a beautiful little town.

I meet a guy. He was also "working and travelling".

We bonded.

Then immigration issues came around. I have a dual citizenship and so with a British passport I was ok, but this guy was from south Africa and it was bad enough the paper work we needed to complete just to head to Europe let alone the amount we needed to get him to stay.

Besides we hadn't known each other all that long. So we went on a holiday. He came to Oz and meet my family, we travelled around, then we went to South Africa and I meet his family and we travelled around.

We got paper work completed in the embassey in Pretoria and as his sponsor we could go back to the UK, back to our little town and out little cottage.

But it was only valid for 10 months. So we made the most of it, we worked hard, had fun and travelled some more. Then it was time to leave.

I returned to Australia and this guy moved back to South Africa.

I was heart broken and so was he, I challenged the Australian immigration office every day, trying hard to find what channels we could find to be together. But as we had no real evidence of committment (and alot more boring stuff) we were stuck.

So I got my job back for the summer in Scotland and flew back via South Africa. We knew it was to be and thought about marriage.

11 months apart and a proposal via mail, a bag piper and a restaurant full of patrions, I became engaged! 8 weeks later I was on a plane to South Africa and I got married. We spent another 8 months back in our little Scottish town, travelled Europe and then once we got immigration papers, moved to Australia. At last. We settled.

This guy is now the father of our two beautiful children and even more a lovely and beautiful man with a massive caring heart. He is my husband and I adore him.

5 years now and we look back with "where did that go", but every year has been something new. If it was written in time for us, I wouldn't have changed a thing.

So Happy Anniversary to US! here is to many more.

We are playing along with buttons by lou lou again today.

At our house, the sun is out and I have been up very early. The washing machine is going, kids are dressed and feed and watching Seasame Street while I check emails and read some blogs with a coffee.

Madeline is finally wearing a hair clip for those curls and I will see how long it lasts.......please be all day!

It's a nice change.

The past 3 weeks has been flus and gastro. A vicious cycle of back and fro from mum and dad to child to child. Poor Aiden got it the worse, constant vomitting and mostly at night, so Duvets, blankets, sheets and pillows are all geting the hottest wash possible and going out in the UV to kill any last germs. But this has been happening everyday this week. A rotation of clean/dirty sheets.

All this while battling my own cold, which just made me feel like a truck went right through me.

But today, yeah! sun. So we might even get outside to the park. The rest of the week, I must work and work hard, there is alot to do to get Summer out in store for October, but the best thing is that hubby and I will celebrate 5 years of marriage this Friday....now where did that go?

Week and market wrap up.

The past week saw me very ill again with flu, while hubby opened his gym with great fan fare in town. He had a huge week getting the last minute things complete, but has a great team behind him. The typical bbq, giveaways and jumping castle, along with "some footballer" for celeb power - yes, I had no idea who Mathew Richardson (Richmond AFL) was, but he was kind enough to sign a t-shirt for me.

Sunday was Mathildas market and it was a very busy day. It starts at 4am for us, getting ready and then taking the drive to Melbourne to set up before the doors open.

A few friends popped by, along with their kids and it's lovely to catch up with them and also hear some wonderful baby news from some! Congrats girls!

I also had a lady from Ronald McDonald House stop by....sorry but her name has escaped me as I type. She was one of the volunteers in the house, while we stayed when Aiden was born over 2 years ago now....it was so good to see her and also to have her remember us.

Anyway, the market was a roaring success (almost a sell out) with the last remants of past season stock being brought and loved. One lady even dressed her little boy right away in a shirt and short she snapped up. Now thats thula love.

Also a big hello to the team from townmouse (beautiful fabrics), little chillies (shoes to die for)and my neigbour Penny from Pocket carnival (cute goodies).

Thula thula Summer range will hit the store in late Sept/early October and it's just stunning, playsuits for all ages are back, along with Vintage lace and buttons. More later.

While over the next few days a few new items and sale items will be listed, so stay tuned in to the blog for details or get it direct on facebook.

Monday morning and the sun is out! So washing is on and the house is opened up to air. Kids are playing in their room and actually I haven’t heard any fighting, so it’s nice and quiet. They play very well these days together and Maddy has turned into a good helper and teacher for her baby brother.

As for me, I’m on market production mode and on the list is booties. Hundreds of booties. A mix of Japanese cottons, floral’s and styles. Machine washable and oh so sweet.

That's my day. Beside going out to put the clothes on the line and then kids can be off for a play in the park…which is wonderfully just outside the door, I love my court.

Oh and I am hoping today the postie delivers some parcels…..I love parcels, especially work ones.

Lets sew! Here is just one of the ways a piece comes together.

Sometimes I don’t sketch a design, I’ll be doing an everyday chore and BANG!, I have an image in my head and I go straight off to try it out. And because I make everything, including patterns for thula thula, it is a long process to make a range for each season.

I start with a simple pattern and draft it out on paper, then cut it out on fabric. Now the best fabric to use is calico for your toile* - but anything cheap is great as it will be cut, sewn, drawn on and then discarded once you make the final pattern. You’ll see here I used a yellow spotty cotton for my toile.

On the mannequin I check fit and use pins to take in excess I don’t want.

Also mark where I think other construction lines would fit, using tailors chalk.

Then it’s back to re-cutting a new toile. Using the chalk lines, I cut and add new seam allowances to the new pattern pieces and sew it back together. And do another fit. Sometimes this can go on for awhile…I love fit. Below is the result of the chalk lines placement.

Then once more it is deconstructed, using my trusty “unpicker” - love this white one, it is super sharp. Ironing each piece to remove creases, each fabric panel is now a pattern piece and drafted back onto paper. Where I need, more seam allowances added and I smooth out curves.

Then I make the final toile, using the new pattern pieces cut from the new pattern. This allows me to finally check the fit and maybe, make a few alterations to the paper pattern. I loved this cut, so it’s now a final pattern! yeah.
Finally it can be cut it into the desired fabric. In this case, it is silk. (below)
This little jacket I would love to show you in complete form with all it’s trims and finishes, but it is part of the summer collection…….I think the toile gives you an amazing hint though.

So there you have it. A very quick listen in a construction method. I think in the end from conception to completion this process took me 4 hours. But to sew the complete final outfit took an hour. I loved every minute of it.

(*Toile- French word meaning linen or cloth but is now used to describe a version of a garment made by a fashion designer or dressmaker to test a pattern)

I recently got an email from a customer (below) who loved her recent purchase. Not long after posting I got an email from a woman who quite rudely said that

“while it might be nice, you are expensive! I do like your designs, but everyone thinks they can sew. Why should I buy handmade when I can get it at (place cheap nasty store here)……cheap”

Ummm, well, it’s not mass produced to start!

Above is nice version – a few choice words in her rant on everything handmade naming a few “stores” she thinks need a wake up call. (quite frankly I hope she doesn’t kiss her kids with her mouth – yep, that rude)

Email straight into delete folder and I went to cry.

I understand that not everyone can spend alot on children clothing, in fact I love a bargain as much as the next girl…..but there is also quality and then there is, well, NOT. I mix BIG W with a few top labels as well as my own designs. My kids run around in track pants and old jeans just like the next kid.

I’m not perfect. Nor was I gloating. I appreciate feedback and most of all I love the happy customer letters, I love what I do and well, will keep doing it.

As a designer, mum, aunt, wife, seamstress, cook, cleaner, etc etc, there are many functions throughout the day that require some skill. I’m a skilled seamstress (that's why I do what I do), but not the best cook. I’m a talented designer, but sometimes a lousy cleaner. Everything balances. So again, I will keep doing it.

I hope that people can see past the $$$ when they come to my store and see the work, love and skill in making everything that is in store myself. That actually you get value for money……that you get personal service from the designer direct, it’s wrapped and sent by me. The emails you send are answered by me…the owner and designer. It’s a very very personal service.

So I decided after a good break down to show you how the designs at thula thula come together.

Over the coming days I will be posting all about the design process. My world of sketching and sewing all shared with you. I’m sure you will love it. Maybe even said “lady” may understand? Maybe?

The Apple Isle

Last week we packed up the car and headed across the waters to Tasmania. I know my babies travel well, but they still surprised me with their happiness at being strapped in a car seat for hours (especially waiting to board the Spirit of Tasmania) or the getting in and out of the car to sight see.

Here are a few moments from the trip….along with my day at mathildas market at the Elizabeth Street Pier…..the most beautiful location.

Lou asked us to play, I'd rather be making yummy cheese and bacon pies also, but today is going to be (for me) get some order in the studio day and for the kids, Daddy is off work, so he has sole "custody" of them and there is always a guarantee I will here heaps of giggles in the lounge as I hide in that horrible messy sewing room. Plus catch up on some needed sewing.
Ha, just caught Aiden trying out Madeline's bike....kept saying "stuck" and I was crying with laughter.

Update......thanks to a tech savvy brother in law, everything has been saved and I am spending all night putting photos on discs.....yikes, now I definately will get an external hard drive. thanks for the emails of support!

Today my computer crashed....so while I rock quietly in the corner and hope that I can recover everything with the help of a lovely brother in law, I can't put any new items in store.....and they are lovely.

Ok, so the store is re-open....there is a touch to finish, but I'm very happy with it. I managed to get a few new items in store also, but while my head was turned, this is what the kids got up to.
Aiden after his lunch, decided to paint, then head on over to the computer to talk to "Ouma"
While Madeline managed to find some very blunt child style scissors and cut all of her my little pony's hair (photo not included, I was too upset to take one).

With the rain coming down outside, kids with cabin fever and not being able to leave their sight to enter my sewing room (it’s screams and fights if I do), I am on the couch instead, hand stitching little eyes, noses and mouths to my new dolls for in store (opening soon).

My favourite part is the hair, all new wool and hand stitched on, it’s really relaxing to style it in many ways and colours. Each little one looks different and starts to show their personality. I think you’ll love them.
